A snowboard trip in Rila Mountain

Uncategorized Add comments

It took me several days to decide from which journey to start. At last I have picked the most recent one – the snowboard journey to Rila Mountain. About 10 days ago some friends and I decided to spend a night in the Rila Lakes Hut, which is located near the beautiful 7 Rila Lakes.

So we prepared our equipment in the Saturday early morning and we were ready to start the trip. We begun the journey from Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. The distance to the mountain is near 100 km. It took us about hour and a half to arrive at the parking spot near the Pionerska hut.

From there we have to walk more than 2 hours through the forest to reach the Rila Lakes hut and more important, the wide snowy slopes above it.

The alternative transportation, which is usually preferred by some lazy people like me, were the so called “Rack Track” vehicles. I was eager to try it, but unfortunately they had a maintenance day and they were not willing to take us to the hut.

There is also a lift ready to be launched, but nobody knows if this will happen this season.

Having no other choice we started climbing towards the our destination.

The path

Actually the path was not tough and after two hours we saw the Rila Lakes hut.

To be honest it looked more like a hotel than a hut. We entered it and confirmed our reservations. We left the backpacks in the room and had a nice lunch in the restaurant.

After reloading the batteries we were ready for snowboarding :).

The downhill looked perfect. It is about 1 km long and probably 500 m wide. The upper part is really fast and when you reach the down part, you can pick one of the many small slopes cowered with powder.

The only drawback which I found was the absence of a ski lift. However, there was a rope-line. This was my first experience with a snowboard and a rope-line and it brought me some bruises. But once you get used to it, its is not a bad way to reach the peak.

So we had a great day on the slopes above the hut.

In the evening, after a fine dinner in the restaurant, we decided to make a party in the igloo besides the hut. We brought some drinks and candles there and we made some fine photos.

The temperature in the igloo was about 0 degrees and we spend some time there.

When we went outside, we were amazed from the cool beauty of the mountain.

Later, we continued the party in the hut, watching some TV, drinking and talking. However, we were so exhausted from the climbing and snowboarding, that we fell asleep before midnight.

On the next day we woke up early in the morning and hit the slopes with more enthusiasm. We even managed to make some amazing photos in the down parts of the slope.

My friends Anatoliy and Svetlin showed some great skill in the fluffy powder.

My performance was also nice and I had a lot of fun.

We continued snowboarding for several hours and although there were some troubles with the rope-line, we were ready to return home with broad smiles on our faces.

The trip back to the cars was quite faster than the one in the opposite direction and in the late Sunday afternoon we were in the cars back to Sofia.

In a conclusion I must say that the slopes above the Rila Lakes Hut are great for winter sports and once the lift is working, there will be many tourists who will be enjoy them. This has been my first ride there, but I hope that I will do more soon.

Also, in the end I would like to congratulate my friend and famous photographer Petar Cholakov for the great photos. You can find them and many more in his gallery.
